This rock fragment contains two fish scales. The scale is largely intact and the growth rings are on the scale. Often the other fossil scales on this website are the impressions of the growth rings in the rock.

Note a ball of clay used to position the scales is in the background.

3D surface views

Part of the reason I look at the 3D surface view is to see how level I got the scale under the microscope. Scale impressions are not completely flat but I try to keep the tilt to a minimum for the photos.
